Howard Soil & Water Conservation District
Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is a great opportunity for H.S. students to gain some experience in the agriculture and conservation field. You can increase valuable skills needed in the future and gain a "hands-on" opportunity.  It also looks great on a resume.

Retired persons, homemakers and others are also welcome. We match a person’s interests and skills with the work and projects we have available, such as Computers, ArcGIS mapping, Conservation Planning, Field Design & Layout, Public Relations, Marketing, Photography, Educational Projects with the Community, and more! Contact us for more information.

Outdoor Classrooms
Two Outdoor Classrooms are held annually in the spring. Arbor Day for the Howard-Winn. school district’s 3rd graders, and Natural Resources Day for the 5th graders.  The students rotate between stations such as Woodland Plants & Flowers, Wildlife, Bird Identification, Tree Identification, Entomology, Prairies, Soils, and Backyard Conservation.

(HSWCD began the Natural Resources Day Outdoor Classroom in 1978 and the Arbor Day Outdoor Classroom in 1986.  These are successful thanks to volunteer instructors who have dedicated their time over the years, and Howard County Conservation for use of their Nature Center and grounds.)

Coloring Contest
Competition is open to all children who are residents of Howard County from Preschool through 6th grade.
