Howard Soil & Water Conservation District

Student Information

Scholarship Opportunities

Every year a scholarship sponsored by the Conservation Districts of Iowa (CDI) is offered to Iowa high school seniors to be used for their first year of education on the college level while pursuing programs of study in any field of agriculture or natural resources. This is a broad field of study and many majors apply.

To complete an application, go to http://www.cdiowa.org/education.html.  Handwritten applications will not be considered.  Deadline is located on the application form.

The Howard SWCD also awards two $500.00 scholarships to local applicants.

Annual Poster Contest

Competition is open to all children who are residents of Howard County from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Students must submit entries as an entire class.  Individual posters will not be accepted.

Each year there is a different conservation theme. Every poster must have an entry form attached. These are mailed to each school with detailed information.  More information can be found at http://www.cdiowa.org/education.html.

Judging of posters is based on conservation message, visual effectiveness, originality, and universal appeal.

First place winners from each age category will receive a prize from the Howard SWCD. First place winners are then submitted for regional competition.

Volunteer Opportunities

Your conservation district needs your help! You can do something to make a difference by volunteering. What is in it for you? For high school or college students this offers a great opportunity to gain some experience in the agriculture and conservation field. Jobs are very competitive in the conservation field. This would not only increase valuable skills needed in the future and give you a "hands-on" opportunity, but would also look great on a resume.

One does not need to be a student. Retired persons, homemakers and others are also welcome. We try to match a person’s interests and skills with the work and projects we have available, such as:

  • Computers
  • ArcGIS mapping
  • Filing & Clerical
  • Conservation Planning
  • Field Design & Layout
  • Educational Projects with Community and Kids
  • Public Relations
  • Marketing
  • Photography
  • Special Projects Related to the Mission of the Soil and Water Conservation District
